This small residence sits perched on a steep hillside overlooking a natural creek in Nichol’s Canyon. In need of additional space, the owner commissioned Kovac Architects to add a master suite and bathroom. SPI was brought in to consult on interior surface materials, paint colors, light fixtures, kitchen appliances and furnishings. The team worked together to create a serene, eclectic interior that complements the natural setting of the home.
The reconfigured floor plan includes an airy living room and a spacious kitchen that opens onto the dining room. SPI furnished the living room with vintage Robjohn Gibbings chairs, Parsons style end tables, 1950s table lamps and a custom designed coffee table. A neutral palette shows off the client’s artwork. In the dining room, a SPI-designed burl wood table inspired by Milo Baughman sits adjacent to a daring glass floor that offers a bird’s view of the unique year-round running stream below. In the library, SPI designed built-in bookshelves fabricated from steel and backed with natural woven wallpaper. On the second floor, a small mezzanine area serves as a home office. The simple furnishings include an antique Florence Knoll desk and a Blackman Cruz Mantis chair.
In the master suite, with its expansive view of the canyon foliage, SPI fabricated a linen upholstered headboard for the bed to complement the built-in wall storage. A flat screen television hangs above a custom designed cantilevered rosewood and Formica wall unit that houses the AV components. In the media room the dark rich colors of the L-shaped sectional sofa and woven leather pillows repeat the colors of the different woods throughout the house. The vintage Tommy Parzinger coffee table splits into two pieces and can be easily moved when more than one table is desired. SPI laid out a collage of the client’s art, photographs and mirrors to give personality and originality to the space.
