SPI began the design process for this New York apartment by taking advantage of a recent remodel that had created a dramatic sunken living room with 20' ceilings. The existing ebonized floors and stark white walls provided the perfect backdrop for furnishings in a palette of warm earth tones and various types of wood. The room was divided into two seating areas, with the primary area containing the sofa, chaise, and two club chairs surrounding a custom coffee table whose nickel-plated frame supports an elegant white stone top. The secondary seating area, which serves as the clients' formal dining room, features a Danish inspired dining table designed by SPI. The table, constructed of white oak, offers seating for six when expanded with its two 15" leaves. This simple division of space allowed the couple to have a formal dining area in spite of the apartment's small size. A banquette in the kitchen is used for everyday eating. The custom rug by Elizabeth Eakins, woven from hand-selected strands of yellow, tan and white yarn, covers most of the living room. The large windows that look onto 5th Avenue were treated as picture frames and dressed in sheer fabric that allows light to enter but is opaque enough for privacy when drawn. For the master bedroom, SPI designed a bed with a tufted headboard and attached night tables. Concealed drawers underneath the mattress and box spring allow for additional storage, essential to a New York apartment. The palette of the bedroom was kept neutral, allowing the accessories and art to supply color. |
